How to Certify Documents for Immigration

Documentation for Immigration must be translated into English. Certified translation by a bilingual person may suffice.

Keep in mind that sometimes certain types of documents, such as academic or job qualifications for validation , may have to be translated by a sworn interpreter. It may even be necessary to obtain the Hague Apostille .
But for most documents, mainly in immigration matters, it will not be necessary. And it is enough with a certified translation made by any bilingual person so you can save money on this process. In addition, the signature of a notary is NOT required.

Who can do a certified translation and how it should be done

  • Any person who is a friend of the applicant for an immigration benefit (not a relative) with fluent knowledge of the Spanish and English languages.
  • You must translate word for word . In other words, a summary of the text it translates is not enough, it must be a faithful and complete translation.
  • The translation must be done on a blank sheet of paper, written in legible handwriting and black ink or -preferable- on a computer.
At the end of the translation is when the following model letter is inserted on the same sheet, which is indicated below and in which it is certified that the person who has translated it has fluent knowledge of English and Spanish and that they have carried out with competence the translation.

Notes on this translation certification

  • Obviously the name or names of the people the document is about and the type of document. The example uses a marriage certificate.
  • In Signed , in addition to putting the full name of the person who made the translation, you must always remember to sign.
  • The address and telephone number must correspond to the person who has done the translation.
Second example of a model to certify a translation

I, Carmen Pérez, certify that I am fluent in the English and Spanish language and that the above document is an accurate translation of the document entitle Birth Certificate.

That together with the certified translation in this way, a legible photocopy of the original document that has been translated must be sent . Include the right and the reverse.

Examples of documents for which this type of translation is sufficient

  • Birth certificates (known in some countries as certificates) that are included in family petitions .
  • Proceedings of widowhood, divorce or annulment of marriage
  • Marriage certificate
  • Sworn statements about the good moral character of a migrant, which is recommended to include in petitions such as pardons .
Translation Tips for Immigration

All documents in Spanish that are sent to the Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) must be translated.

However, sometimes those sent to consulates are not always necessary . It will depend on the policy of each consulate, so it is convenient to check on the website what the requirements are.
If you choose a professional translator, you must also include some type of certification on the translation you carry out, for example by following the previous examples outlined in this article.
